For Donald Trump's legal team, the strategy seemed to be downplay, disparage and dismiss.

His attorney Todd Blanche characterized the 34 charges of falsifying records as a "business records violation" that Trump himself knew nothing about. His legal team also painted Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, as a proven liar, adding "his entire financial livelihood depends on President Trump’s destruction.”

In an interview with Sinclair following opening statements, John P. Fishwick Jr., a former U.S. Attorney said, “It’s a two-part defense for the Trump legal team. It’s that you can’t trust Michael Cohen. And the former President didn’t do anything wrong. This was a little paperwork that he didn’t have anything to do with.”

Trump himself also once again downplayed the case as politically motivated, telling reporters outside the courthouse, “This is done as election interference; everybody knows it”, a 2005 recording where Trump was heard discussing grabbing women sexually without permission, just before the 2016 election. They also detailed thethat followed, including to adult film star Stormy Daniels to hide the information from voters and "therefore influence the outcome of the election.
