Tim Allen, who plays Scott Calvin (a.k.a Santa Claus) in The Santa Clause franchise, reveals regrets about The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.
Tim Allen wishes he'd had more screen time with Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Allen first brought accidental Santa Scott Calvin to life in 1994's The Santa Clause and reprised the role in 2002's The Santa Clause 2 and 2006's trilogy finisher, The Santa Clause 3. The third film saw Allen's character struggling to balance his new family with Carol and his responsibilities as Santa, which left him susceptible to Jack Frost's manipulations.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Allen spoke about his feelings surrounding the third installment in The Santa Clause franchise. The actor regrets the film's direction, saying it "overshot the runway" and that the upcoming Disney+ series should "explain that one away and bring it back down to magic.
"What happened was that we became infected by our own success. [1994’s The Santa Clause] was huge, but we had about $11 for special effects. [2002’s The Santa Clause 2] was an extension of that but now we could put lights in the window because we had more production money. By number three, all we had was money. The story kind of just got bigger and bigger. And the fact that Marty Short and I never did a scene together that was funny, I’m still going huh.
Based on its description, the Santa Clauses will likely fulfill Allen's desire to bring the magic back to the franchise. The miniseries will follow Scott as he considers retirement to provide his family with a normal life. He sets this plan into motion, meeting with candidates to replace him as Santa as he seeks to leave his post in good hands. The trailer for the series saw Allen looking exactly the same as Santa despite the 15 years between the show and The Santa Clause 3.
Will Martin Short's Jack Frost Return? Allen's renewed interest in the franchise shows that he is focused on correcting the mistakes made with The Santa Clause 3, which had the biggest budget but the lowest box office numbers of the trilogy. Along those lines, it's possible that Short's return as Jack Frost could be in the cards since Allen seems to regret the way their characters were used previously.
