One worker is trapped, another is fighting life-threatening injuries in hospital and 29 have escaped unharmed.

One man remains trapped hundreds of metres underground and another is fighting life-threatening injuries in hospital after a gold mine collapsed near Ballarat, in regional Victoria.

Victoria Police Acting Inspector Lisa McDougall said rescue teams extracted one of the workers, who was airlifted to Melbourne's The Alfred with life-threatening injuries to his lower body. The premier says it "will be a long night" for workers and families impacted by the mine collapse. The uninjured workers were stuck in the pod for hours but had been brought to the surface by the time McDougall spoke at about 10.30pm."That was the rescue of the patient that's been airlifted, the extraction of the other employees who were in the mine and then the third phase is accessing safely that other patient – until we can make an assessment of the medical condition of that person – but we can't put a timeline around that.
