...including the first season's villain.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One Piece executive producer Steven Maeda explains the live-action show's biggest changes from the manga. Developed by Maeda and Matt Owens, the series is an adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's ongoing manga series which follows the seafaring adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates and their captain, Monkey D. Luffy , who hopes to become King of the Pirates by discovering the titular treasure.

Talking to TV Line on the day of Netflix's One Piece release date, Maeda explained some of the biggest changes from the manga to the live-action show. Because there is so much material from the manga to work with, the executive producer says the biggest challenge was condensing the show into a "digestible season of television for eight episodes." The biggest change, in Maeda's mind, was "ramping up" the Marines' pursuit of the Straw Hat Pirates.

The choice was made to keep [this season] under the first 100 chapters because it’s so big, it’s so sprawling. There are so many different directions to go in, and none of the sets ever really repeat, which makes it a huge production challenge because they’re going to new places every one or two episodes. I think [the manga] is at 1,089 chapters now and it isn’t finished yet... [Season 1 is] just a series of wonderful, inventive, unique locations and antagonists.

The One Piece Show's Biggest Changes From The Manga Explained Further As is the case with any adaptation, changes are always necessary in order to translate a story to another medium. Because Oda's manga has been ongoing since 1997 and spans over 1,000 chapters, the biggest challenge for Netflix's One Piece was condensing season 1's story into eight episodes while also remaining faithful to the beloved manga and pleasing its passionate fans.
