Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D Luffy next to Nico Robin and Vivi from One Piece
Warning! Contains spoilers for the One Piece anime and manga!Although the live-action adaptation of One Piece has met the expectations of thousands of fans worldwide by being faithful to the legacy of Eiichiro Oda's work, the Netflix production has also been the subject of controversy for"ruining" the image that some viewers had of the story.
But unlike many live-action adaptations, where criticism stems from plot changes, in One Piece, it has extended to casting decisions, unfortunately sparking a passionate debate ahead of its new season. While the live-action Straw Hats are quite ethnically diverse, many fans argue that a particular casting choice in One Piece Season 2 doesn't align with the character's cultural representation. Specifically, some viewers aren't all happy with the casting of Charithra Chandran for the character of Miss Wednesday. However, new insight from a member of the One Piece production team has revealed that those who disagree with the live-action casting should reconsider, as it comes directly from the manga creator, Oda, suggesting a positive future for the adaptation. Charithra Chandran’s Role as One Piece’s Live-Action Nefertari Vivi, Controversy Explained One of the main characters debuting in One Piece Season 2 is Miss Wednesday, whose real name is Nefertari Vivi. Vivi will be portrayed by Charithra Chandran, known for her work on Bridgerton, with the character playing a significant role in the story after meeting the Straw Hats and even becoming the central figure in the Alabasta Saga. Unfortunately, the casting has caused a stir because, in the manga and anime, Vivi has pale skin, while Charithra Chandran is of Indian descent. Some viewers have questioned the casting on social media following the release of the latest trailer for the live-action, despite One Piece being known for its blend of cultures and the fact that Vivi's character isn't thematically Caucasian. Vivi is originally from Alabasta, a desert kingdom inspired by the Middle East but also by India. For this reason, many fans have condemned the negative reception of Vivi's casting, arguing that it's discrimination based on skin tone when One Piece's own message is a critique of intolerance, racism, and the pursuit of equality for all. One Piece Live-Action Writer Confirms Eiichiro Oda’s Direct Involvement in Casting While other One Piece live-action stars previously defended Charithra Chandran, stating that she received Oda's direct approval as the best choice to play Vivi, there has been a misconception that the manga creator only had a say in the casting of the Straw Hats and not other characters in the adaptation. Thankfully, a One Piece live-action writer had just settled the Oda casting debate. The One Piece content creator Randy Troy, a recent YouTube Livestream, revealed that Oda handpicked Chandran from among several candidates from different ethnicities represented in Alabasta. Furthermore, Oda, as the creator, has been given the final decision on"every character with a name" in the series. Related One Piece Creator Admits Netflix’s Live-Action Plans Are Way Bigger Than Fans Think Netflix's most ambitious live-action anime adaptation ever gets yet another promising endorsement straight from the creator himself. Posts By J.R. Waugh As shared on his X account, Randy Troy, a SAG-AFTRA writer and actor, joined the One Piece Live-action team for the second season in 2023. He has shared some production details with fans, stating that"Oda is more involved in the production than everyone thinks," which Troy believes is what made the live-action series work so far. One Piece Live-Action Makes a Major Hint About Alabasta’s Cultural Representation One Piece Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on March 10, 2026, but the next installment is already in development. One Piece Season 3 will continue the Alabasta Saga, and as with other characters so far, the live-action is trying to honor the cultural influences Oda included in the story. Oda picked her out of multiple candidates. I know the other candidates, and there were other aspects of Alabasta in the picture. But that is not to say there won't be representation in other characters. — Randy Troy. Therefore, while fans only know who will be bringing Vivi and Igaram to life, with Chandran being of Indian descent and Yonda Thomas being from South Africa, other Alabasta characters like Nefertari Cobra, Pell, Koza, and Chaka could be played by actors with roots in other Middle Eastern and North African countries. Eiichiro Oda’s Key Role in One Piece Live-Action Casting Is a Huge Win for Fans The revelation that Eiichiro Oda personally influences every live-action cast member, not just the main characters, is a watershed moment for One Piece fans. This is because one of the main reasons the series is so beloved is the universality of its story. Unlike a good deal of anime that only depict Japanese culture, the islands on the Grand Line in One Piece showcase all kinds of cultures. Such as Drum Island, inspired by Canada; Thriller Bark, in Transylvania; and Dressrosa, in Spain. Consequently, the production team's effort to maintain One Piece's identity so far is a good sign for future seasons. One Piece's author knows better than anyone who most closely resembles the characters he created in real life. Therefore, fans should patiently wait to see the series instead of blatantly claiming that an actor didn't fit the original character's image, showing both respect for the hard work of the live-action team and Oda's vision. 208 8.6/10 7/10 One Piece 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action Adventure Fantasy Release Date August 31, 2023 Network Netflix Showrunner Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, Joe Tracz Directors Tim Southam, Marc Jobst, Josef Kubota Wladyka Writers Tiffany Greshler, Diego Gutierrez, Allison Weintraub, Lindsay Gelfand Cast See All Franchise One Piece Main Genre Adventure Creator Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, Eiichiro Oda Producers Ted Biaselli, Amie Horiuchi, Takuma Naitô Seasons 2 Story By Eiichiro Oda Streaming Service Netflix Powered by Expand Collapse
