'That is a hard no,' showrunner Steven Maeda says.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda strictly forbade one thing from happening in Netflix's live-action adaptation. Developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, the series is an adaptation of Oda's ongoing manga which follows the seafaring adventures of Monkey D. Luffy , the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search for the titular treasure that will make him King of the Pirates.
However, don't expect Nami and Zoro's relationship to turn romantic. Talking to TV Line, Maeda revealed that Oda strictly forbade any romances between the Going Merry crew members in Netflix's live-action show. The co-showrunner says it was "not the intent" to tease a romance between Nami and Zoro, and the audience response is merely a result of the actors' "great chemistry together.
One of the mandates from [manga creator] Eiichiro Oda was against romance on the crew. That is a hard no, as far as the manga and the live-action show are concerned... It was because they just had great chemistry together. But that certainly was not the intent. One of the fun things about watching television is what you read into it and what you bring to the table when you’re watching a show.
Netflix's Live-Action One Piece Is Right Not To Have Romances It's perfectly reasonable that Oda, who created the popular manga series, was against having any romances in Netflix's live-action adaption. The ongoing manga, which spans over 1,000 chapters, does not feature any romances between the Going Merry crew members.
