Rolls-Royce has unveiled a one-off electric Spectre dubbed Lunaflair, featuring a holographic paint finish inspired by the lunar halo. The unique paint, developed over a year, uses seven layers of lacquer infused with magnesium fluoride and aluminium flakes to create a shimmering rainbow effect.

One-off headed for the USA gets unique paint inspired by the lunar halo Credit where it’s due to Rolls-Royce customers, they aren’t half creative with their commissions sometimes. The recent Boat Tail cars had demonstrated the considerable lengths that could be reached with combustion coupes and convertibles - now it’s time for the electric one. This is the Lunaflair Spectre , a one-off build based on Rolls-Royce ’s EV that features holographic paint . Which took a year to develop.

The car has been inspired by the lunar halo which, if you also didn’t know, is a colourful circle of light around the moon created by moonlight passing through ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds. They then refract the light, making the techicolour effect, not dissimilar to light passing through a diamond apparently. Those commissioning a Rolls-Royce inspired by meteorology are hardly likely to be spurred into action by drizzle.

To put that inspiration into reality, the Spectre features a holographic paint finish to give that rainbow effect of the halo. Don’t you dare go calling it flip paint now. The result of 12 months of work, the Lunaflair’s finish features seven layers of lacquer infused with ‘fine flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminium’ to make it really pop in the sun. Not the official R-R line, but you see the point - this thing positively shimmers.

The Lunaflair has been inspired by a previous one-off Rolls-Royce, the Phantom Syntopia seen last year. That was Liquid Noir, so this car was to be ‘a light and luminous expression of the concept’. Rolls-Royce suggests that this cross-pollination of ideas, where one unique build can inspire another, ‘speaks to the power of Bespoke’. The interior really is like nothing else, though, the blue, white and pink intending to evoke the colours of the halo.

Any commissions that do want to follow in the footsteps of the Lunaflair won’t be too similar, however, as that paint that took a year will remain exclusive to this Spectre. No holographic Cullinans coming soon, basically. But bespoking a Rolls-Royce doesn’t have to mean a one-off, and there are many cars in the classifieds with unique elements.
