’One of the worst-organised races’: Aussie star blasts ‘dinosaurs’ as Giro riders protest over snow
LIVIGNO, ITALY - MAY 21: Simon Geschke of Germany and Team Cofidis - Blue Mountain Jersey in the rain and snow prior to the 107th Giro d'Italia 2024, Stage 16 a 206km stage from Prato di Stelvio to Santa Cristina Valgardena - Monte Pana 1625m / #UCIWT / on May 21, 2024 in Livigno, Italy . Aussie rider Ben O’Connor has blasted Giro d’Italia organisers as “dinosaurs” as riders staged pre-stage protest over being asked to race in heavy snow and rain.
“It’s probably one of the worst-organised races I think and I’m just being honest. This would never happen in 99 per cent of other situations.“It’s just a shame that it is 2024 and you have dinosaurs who really don’t see the human side of things.” Pogacar gave Pellizzari his overall leader’s pink jersey as the pair embraced at the end of a tumultuous stage which was overshadowed by the rider revolt.
The day was certainly a good one for Pogacar as he leads Daniel Martinez by seven minutes and 18 seconds in the overall standings and also leads in the mountains classification after two straight summit victories. But there was no-one at the start line despite RCS’s insistence on a start in Livigno, where local authorities had paid to have a Giro stage start in the ski resort.
The peloton assembled in the shelter of a petrol station before setting off, swaddled in rain gear, for the shortened run.
