His 42-year career has seen him work in local government in Manchester, Sheffield and London as well as serving as Stockport council's chief executive before taking the helm at the GMCA

One of the most powerful public officials in Greater Manchester has announced he will be retiring. Eamonn Boylan will step down as chief executive of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester in May.

Mr Boylan has steered GMCA and TfGM through a period in which the government has given both organisations more responsibilities to make decisions and run services locally. He spearheaded the 'trailblazer' devolution deal which local leaders signed earlier this year. Mr Boylan has also steered the GMCA through some difficult times, from the Manchester Arena terrorist attack that led to big changes at GMFRS, to the Covid crisis and the appointment of a new chief constable of GMP after the force's failings were exposed in 2020. Mr Boylan does not have direct control of the police force, but Mr Burnham oversees GMP's governance and sets its budget as mayor.

"The sheer determination and tenacity that everyone demonstrated across Greater Manchester during the pandemic shows how much stronger we are when we work together with one voice. We have also made significant progress in areas such as adult skills, public service reform, developing the digital ecosystem, moving on with our hugely ambitious Green agenda, and getting on with delivering Places for Everyone.
