Three years in the making, Calabash, from the chefs behind Kingston 11 and Komaaj, is an all-day eatery with a full bar, lounge and market.
chef-owner’s vision for the restaurant of now: A multiculturally-driven gathering place that’s open all day, serves high-quality breakfast dishes and an afternoon menu of Afro-Caribbean-inspired entrees and sandwiches alongside Sadr’s Northern Iranian dips, sides and salads. There’s a full bar, a lounge for wine tasting events and a market for grab-and-go, sauces, spices, teas and more.
Calabash, which seats 80 and is breaking ground on a deck for outdoor dining, opened on Dec. 7 after numerous delays brought on by the pandemic, construction issues, slow permitting approval and contractor changes. Now that it’s here, you might consider Caribbean and northern Iranian an odd combination. But the menu is very intentional, and, as a result, the dishes complement each other well.
Sadr’s food is deeply rooted in northern Iranian culinary traditions, like foraging and preservation, that are common in Rasht and smaller villages along the Caspian Sea, where he spent summers as a child visiting his family’s farms and home in the Alborz Mountains. He still visits once a year to go foraging and shopping at the rural bazaars.
