In the 2023 version of this worldwide community science event, amateur naturalists in the San Antonio area recorded — wait for it —It's the first time that's happened in the history of the event.that bills itself as"one of the largest community science events in the world." Volunteer naturalists across the globe take photographs and record observations of wild plants and animals in and near urban areas.
The idea is to check on the status of threatened species, monitor changes in the range of native organisms and — this is the brass ring — possibly identify new species. This year's challenge was held from April 28 to May 1.Since 2016. It began as a friendly competition between two California institutions: the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. It's since grown into an international event.
Using the iNaturalist app, they upload their pictures and field notes to a database, where thousands of other citizen-scientists can see them. The City Nature Challenge, an annual four-day event, encourages volunteer naturalists across Texas and the world to photograph wild plants and animals in and near urban areas. Their observations are a valuable contribution to Texas Nature Trackers, a research and conservation program of Texas Parks and Wildlife.Their uploaded photos and descriptions can be viewed by the entire iNaturalist community, including real scientists.
