One killed, one injured in hit-and-run outside Pacheco State Park; suspect at large
SANTA CLARA COUNTY — Police were searching for a driver who fled after being involved in a fatal crash early Sunday near Pacheco State Park, then abandoned their car when it stopped running.
Both cars were eastbound on Highway 152 at 1:53 a.m. when a 2007 Lexus collided with the rear of a Kia Optima, according to a release from the California Highway Patrol. The crash sent the Kia down an embankment; it overturned before settling on its wheels. The CHP said the Kia’s driver, a 49-year-old man, suffered major injuries. A 42-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were from Castaic; authorities were withholding their identities pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.
After the collision, the Lexus driver continued until that car became disabled west of Dinosaur Point Road, according to the CHP. The vehicle was abandoned when CHP officers arrived. Anyone who witnessed or has any information regarding this collision is asked to contact Officer T. Mahanay or Officer M. Sakamoto at the CHP Hollister-Gilroy Area Office at 408-427-0700.
