One dead, several injured in East Oakland shooting
OAKLAND — A man died and seven others were injured Monday after a shooting in an East Oakland neighborhood, authorities said. Shortly before 6:10 p.m., police responded to reports of a possible shooting after learning of a ShotSpotter activation near the 5900 block of MacArthur Boulevard in the city’s Seminary neighborhood.
When officers arrived at Seminary Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, they found no victims at the initial scene, but soon received reports of multiple people managing to obtain their own transportation to hospitals for treatment. At a press conference Monday night, an Oakland police spokesperson confirmed eight people were shot, with one person later pronounced dead. The seven other victims were each later listed in stable condition. His identity was not available, pending next-of-kin notification by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau. Other officers responded to the scene in the parking lot of a Valero gas station, blocking off traffic and recovering surveillance-camera footage and spent casings. Evidence technicians had taped off the station’s parking area and pumps late Monday, with dozens of yellow crime evidence markers scattered across the pavement. Nearby, two vehicles were visible: a black Tesla SUV parked away from the pumps, and a silver Toyota sedan beside a pump. A person who appeared to be a gas-station employee could be seen standing in the station’s office doorway watching as evidence technicians cautiously bent over the markers there and out dotting the intersection of 60th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. Two witnesses, including one who identified himself as the gas station’s owner but refused to identify himself, told this news organization that it appeared that several people had been shooting a music video shortly before gunfire broke out. Police did not comment directly on what preceded the shooting, but did ask for anyone with “video pertaining to the incident” to contact investigators.
