One person died and 48 were injured in a suspected gas explosion that tore through Johannesburg’s busy Bree Street just after 5pm on Wednesday, according to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Deadly Explosion Rips Open Street in Johannesburg CBDOne person died and 48 others were injured when an underground explosion hit the Johannesburg central business district on Wednesday July 19, 2023. Thirty-four vehicles were damaged. South African news outlet TimesLive reports that the explosion caused panic, splitting a busy street open and leaving many vehicles damaged, with some blown off the road by the force of the blast. Reporters on the scene described the intense smell of gas lingering in the air. Initial reports said that nine people had been injured but this was revised by Joburg emergency management service (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi. In a tweet, Mulaudzi said that a body had been recovered by firefighters while 41 others were treated for "serious to minor" injuries on the scene.
