Despite his place as Star Wars' most iconic villain, Emperor Palpatine is constantly trying to replace his Sith apprentice Darth Vader. While it's a Sith tradition that apprentices only stick around as long as they're useful to their masters, Palpatine is so focused on this goal due to Vader’s major shortcomings within the Galactic Empire.

To a certain extent this is exactly how the Sith are meant to operate, but Palpatine flirted with heresy just for the chance to create something stronger than Vader.

Vader is a far more contemplative and effective military leader and warrior, whose brilliant tactics, manipulations, and official position within the Imperial hierarchy are responsible for countless victories across the galaxy, as well as the recruitment and training of new dark side warriors.
