Prime Minister has promised to spend billions on transport schemes in the region after scrapping HS2 up North

"Rail boffins: can you help me understand how that works?" Travel guru Simon Calder was incredulous as he took to social media last week to query one of the many questionable elements of the Prime Minister's 'Network North' rail vision.

On a trip to Nottinghamshire this week Mr Sunak admitted the long list of transport projects he said would receive funding from the scrapped northern leg of HS2 were actually just “illustrative” and not meant as pledges. A massive programme of upgrades and electrification of existing routes in Yorkshire and across the North will bring down journey times, if they ever go ahead. And there's more money to improve buses to help get people from the outskirts of cities like Leeds into the centre much quicker.

In simple terms, there just isn't enough space on our tracks and at our stations for all the services we want to run, let alone the many more we'd like to run in the future. As it stands a broken down train somewhere near Manchester can back up the whole network all the way across the Pennines.
