A child has been arrested after police brought in extra powers to deal with anti-social behaviour in Skelmersdale.

Lancashire Constabulary introduced a dispersal order on Friday night after "a large group of youths" were involved in chaotic scenes which included rocks being thrown and quad bikes being ridden. The affected zone covered the Concourse Shopping Centre and the newly opened Tawd Valley Shopping Centre, both of which had been frequently targeted in recent weeks and months.

The extended powers mean police can order anyone acting suspiciously to leave the area and that officers can search anyone for weapons or other illegal items without prior reason. The force said it is stepping up patrols to find those responsible for anti-social behaviour. The dispersal order ran overnight on Friday and police today say one youth has been arrested but others are expected to suffer the same fate once CCTV is reviewed.

"The support of local businesses, schools/colleges, West Lancs CSP and most importantly you in helping to tackle ASB is genuinely appreciated. Please remember that only a very small minority of youths are responsible, let’s not let them spoil it for the vast majority. Please speak with your children/loved ones and encourage them to not to get involved or associate with those engaged in ASB.
