Lorri smiling at Lisa while standing near the ocean in One Another

Friendships are one of the most important things in life, but they can become the most complicated relationships to navigate after a certain point. Whether because of a miscommunication that festers into deeper resentments, talking less after moving apart, or simply recognizing a connection was only founded on negative traits, friendships can end just as easily as they began, regardless of how long they've been in place.

This exact idea is at the core of Amber Love's One Another, a new documentary fresh out of 2026's SXSW line-up. The filmmaker finds a very unique balance between highlighting the unconditional love that blooms from life-long friendships and exploring the importance of building new bonds that may result in breaking old ones, and it makes for a largely charming diversion. One Another Has Some Meaningful Conversations About Friendship One Another introduces viewers to Joe, Giorgia, and Lorri, three very different people across the United States with one thing in common – they're all facing the potential conclusion of the most intimate friendship in their lives. Joe, a queer man who better embraced his real self thanks to his friend Roni, embarks on a cross-country move to San Francisco, which Roni joins before returning to her home. Giorgia, still reeling from the mental stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic, finds herself pondering the status of her friendship with Alexa. She's consistently written letters to her since she was a teenager, but has slowed down after having a mental health crisis. Lorri, experiencing the early stages of empty nest syndrome, begins looking for ways to avoid feelings of loneliness, namely by aiming to rekindle one of her most important friendships that fell apart years prior.Amber Love, making her feature directorial debut after helming a handful of shorts, has certainly picked a great trio of figures for audiences to follow in One Another. Joe, Giorgia, and Lorri not only prove to be a charming group of people, but an appropriately diverse one that gives viewers a range of life experiences to become immersed in. Lorri and Giorgia, in particular, prove to be the real emotional anchors of the SXSW doc. The latter's reflection on the decline of her friendship with Alexa feels all too important for destigmatizing making mental health a priority over certain relationships. Meanwhile, the former's candid reflections on both her friendship with Lisa during her first cancer diagnosis, and her family's bonds with others in their Michigan town, nicely spotlights how a pause in a friendship doesn't have to mean an end. Unfortunately, Joe's arc is one area where One Another finds itself becoming imbalanced and less engaging. Much like Giorgia, the movie's chronicling of his and Roni's declining friendship taps into important conversations about mental health and self-love. However, compared to the deeper discussions around the other two subjects' lives, Joe and Roni's story of divergence feels a little too safe and straightforward with the cross-country move; Love almost seems to want to engage with it less as the film progresses. Another element that doesn't quite feel fleshed out is the nature of Giorgia and Alexa's friendship. Given One Another starts after Giorgia has elected to stop reaching out, it's understandable that the majority of the film would focus on her perspective of the broken friendship. And yet, even with the occasional use of dramatizations of their past activities, it doesn't feel as though Love wants to give Alexa any kind of voice in the way she does for Roni and Lisa. Thankfully, despite the movie feeling imbalanced in parts, One Another still proves to be a generally charming enough diversion. Love's visual direction and editing choices are artful yet intimate; Joe, Giorgia and Lorri all prove to be great personalities to keep things enjoyable; and the movie has some very meaningful things to say about unconditional love and friendship. 6/10 One Another Like Follow Followed Documentary Release Date March 19, 2026 Runtime 95 minutes Director Amber Love Writers Amber Love One Another explores the evolving dynamics between three individuals facing the potential dissolution of their close friendships.
