Editor Chris Quinn hosts our daily half-hour news podcast, with editorial board member Lisa Garvin, City Hall reporter Courtney Astolfi and content director Laura Johnston.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Members of the Haslam family have dumped more than $6.5 million into American elections during this two-year political cycle alone.

We are big advocates of the Sunshine law here, and the state auditor haw weighed in on a public meetings battle in Cleveland Heights, where the City Council members are meeting privately in what seems pretty clear to be a violation of the law. It’s not every day the state auditor has to referee something like this. What does he say?

This is another Cleveland thing, like Sweetest Day, that I never heard of. What is a Russian tea biscuit? It’s Wednesday on Today in Ohio, the news podcast discussion from cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer, which means we have Courtney Astolfi with us, but we’ve had Courtney Astolfi with us for a week and a half after today, Layla returns. Thank you, Courtney, for filling in for this time. It’s been great conversation and we have more today.

515,000 GOP versus 349,000 Democrats, but over 800,000 from independent voters. People aged 55 and over have cast the most votes so far for a total of 1.2 million in absentee ballots and early voting. Cuyahoga County, 65 % of 175,000 absentee ballots have been cast. 42,000 have voted early. Big numbers in Lake County, 20,000.The thing that we’re hearing all week long this week is that there’s a long line at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections as long as 90 minutes or longer.

But on the city side, learned yesterday that mayor Justin Biv proposes paying the city’s chunk straight out of the general fund. Now there’s always money left over in the city budget at the end of the year. This year, there’s going to be about 34 million. Biv wants to take most of that and settle up this score with the teams. But you know, city council members were not pleased about this request. This is a big ask.

This can be traced to Willie Jenks. He’s a former Batboy. He became the visiting clubhouse manager in 2007. And they came up with this idea in his office asking people to sign the wall once Johan Santana signed it because he said he’d sign anything. He’s had to sign all these baseballs and he just went off the rails and signed a whole bunch of things, including this wall. So it became the visiting clubhouse wall of fame. And to get on that wall, you had to be voted in.

attorney and former councilman Mike Unger is representing four of the council members. And he says a quorum of members never got together to discuss pending legislation. And I’m thinking the emphasis is on quorum. So maybe they did meet. But it’s not true because he’s talking about the entire council. But what’s happening is there’s three member committees on the council. The committees are governed by the same law.

55 projects around the United States got a piece of this money from the EPA’s Clean Ports program. It’s a $3 billion pot of money and Cleveland’s getting nearly $100 million.Well, and Chris Ronan is big on sustainability. He’s created all sorts of stuff to push it. He appoints members to this support board. He ought to talk to them because he has his guy there now doing what he wants to do when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. You’re listening to Today in Ohio.

mass transit was a huge issue to get to different places, including the libraries in some of these areas. So if they can, I hope this is a trend that catches on that other parents are and taxpayers are in favor of because it would make it, I mean, my kid’s 14, looking down the future at this and not looking forward to him driving at all, but it’d be nice if he could do some of it in school.
