As March 1917 got underway, Americans were just learning of a German plot to draw Mexico into World War I against the U.S. For their part, Mexico would get Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
The Zimmermann Telegram, named after German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann, was intercepted and decoded by British intelligence, who notified American officials of the plan. Congress voted to declare war against Germany more than a month later.
Locally, a large pin oak fell at Main and Gray. To the Chronicle, this wasn't just any tree. It had been there before the city was established apparently. So, using prose that one never sees regarding a tree on Page One, here's a brief snippet of what the paper published: "I have seen babies come from somewhere, borne first in the arms of women, then larger, playing around my great trunk, then lovers walking in the dusk beneath me, then men and women, old and bent and going feebly with backward glances -- and I have seen the black processions that take them somewhere, as they came from somewhere. I have seen life, and joyed in the smell and the taste and the sound of it, and now that I pass, as the humans pass and die, I do not lament, for I have lived.
