President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. encouraged Filipinos on the country’s 125th Independence Day to find confidence from the past and continue to stand up to “new oppressors and challenges.”

The chief executive acknowledged on Monday the efforts of the nation's ancestors to defend the country's freedom, which, Marcos said, provided Filipinos “the guidance and confidence to move forward united.”

Marcos said the fight continues, as he urged Filipinos to “take to heart the immeasurable courage and loss that came out of our heroes.” However, he noted that “corrosive political and social conditions,” such as poverty, inequality, and apathy, make the Philippines “not as free as we would like to profess and believe.”The president also reiterated his call for Filipinos to unite.

“I appeal to all Filipinos to look at our national flag and national anthem with the sincerest affection and genuine respect. Although purely symbolic, flag raising and singing of the national anthem are never trifling or insignificant. Both the flag and the anthem are concrete symbols of our nationhood and unity,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said during the celebration in Cavite.
