Delta's CEO says the surge in the omicron variant has peaked and people are ready to start flying again
Because omicron is so contagious, it is running out of people to infect, just a month and a half after scientists in South Africa first spotted it, The Associated Press reported. The Transportation Security Administration said that on Wednesday, about 1.2 million people cleared security, up from 1.1 million on Tuesday and the two lowest numbers since April 28, when slightly less than 1.2 million passengers flew.
For airlines, what is fortunate, Hauenstein noted on the call, is that Omicron is “impacting the lightest five weeks in terms of business travel.” A phenomenon, Bastian said, is that even as cases surged during and after the holidays, “Demand was really strong — We didn’t see cancellations .” Rather, Delta saw, the “resilience of customers and their willingness to travel.”
Bastian forecast that “The first 60 days of the year will be impacted,” but travel well strengthen “as we move into President’s Day weekend. a strong spring and summer travel season are ahead of us.” The stock market appeared to buy in to Delta’ optimism. Share prices were up about 2% in early afternoon trading.
