Get ready for the 'omega block' to dominate this week:
All of them feature an exaggerated north-to-south jet stream alignment that causes weather patterns to move slowly for a time, which is where the term "block" comes into play. Essentially, the weather pattern is clogged up, and this prevents weather systems from progressing at a steady pace from west to east like they normally do.Early this week, we'll see cooler-than-average temperatures associated with the two southward plunges of the jet stream in the East and near California.
The omega pattern will slowly shift eastward later this week, but the East will remain cool and the Southwest will cool down even more. Parts of the Plains will see a warmup as the high pressure ridge shifts toward the central U.S.Another aspect of this weather pattern is that it will result in wet weather in the Great Lakes and Northeast through midweek. That could include some pockets of snow in parts of those regions.
California and Oregon will also see some rain showers and mountain snow over the next couple of days. The Plains will start the week dry under the high pressure ridge, but some showers and storms will return to that region late this week as the energy in the southward-plunging jet stream near the West Coast kicks eastward.
