hit an undeniable pitch, sending him and his crew back home immediately, and for an indefinite future. Prior to that, the Midwest native said he’d been on the road for the past two years, without pause, touring the world. The transition to back to stillness, was, he says, jarring at first.
“It was really hard for me at first, to get used to not moving, because I was constantly moving. Now, I feel pretty good, but it was definitely really hard for everyone in my house, like, ‘What should we do?’” Omar tellsSpeaking on the phone from the car he’s driving around somewhere in Los Angeles as he’s pulling up into his driveway, he sounds at ease. His family back in his hometown of Hobart, Indiana are well and staying home, but for him, while he’s also been home, the work hasn’t stopped.
A key element to his sound is getting a gut check from his friends back in Indiana. "I send them everything, I love their opinions and I'm lucky enough that all my friends have really good taste in music,” he says. All this work hasn’t meant that he’s not taking time to himself, getting back to the feel of the Midwest that’s central to his music. “I've been riding my bike a lot.
His next single will likely be a Bootsy Collins-feeling joint that he’s been dreaming to make for a long time, but never really found the inspiration—until now. “I just woke up with it, and then I just made it immediately. Didn’t even change, just got out of bed, directly to the studio in my room. It turned out to be one of my favorite songs on the project.”
Listeners can also expect some Spanish language corridos, a Mexican style of songwriting that places the storytelling history of ballads at its center. The project, he says, will be bilingual for the most part, “I’ve got Spanish all over this sh*t. It wasn’t forced or anything, it was just in the moment.”
