Early scoring for Troy set the home side Trojans up for success, as they go on to win 7-2 over Little Rock to secure the Super Regionals crown and their first ever trip to the DI College World Series.
in front of the over-capacity crowd at Riddle-Pace Field in the program’s first time ever playing in and hosting a Division I Super Regional series, the Troy Trojans baseball team had just one goal in mind for Saturday in front of their home faithful: finish the job.
And finish they did, as Troy created some early offensive magic and pulled off one of their better defensive performances of the postseason thus far en route to a 7-2 victory over Little Rock, securing the all-important 2-0 series win and Troy Super Regional crown while punching their ticket to the Cornhusker State for the College World Series. The home-side Trojans, who acted as the away team in today’s matchup, got their scoring started in the top of the first inning.
After an Aaron Piasecki single and Josh Pyne walk to open the game, Steven Meier would take a hit-by-pitch with two outs, setting up a bases loaded situation for Drew Nelson who blooped a ball into left field and brought home a two to give Troy the early 2-0 lead. A Piasecki sacrifice fly in the following inning would bring in Houston Markham to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd, and a well-hit ball past the infield and into right field from Meier in the 3rd would give enough time for Jimmy Janicki to jet around the bases from second and beat the throw at home plate to extend the advantage out to 4-0 for Troy.
Little Rock would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a fielder’s choice bringing in a run from third, but Troy responded back with another run courtesy of a Pyne two-out single in the 7th to get Jabe Boroff home and make it 5-1.
The visiting Trojans would tack on another run with their first home run of the round in the bottom of the 8th, but Troy limited any further damage and advanced to the final inning of play, where much like Boroff delivered an exclamation point to secure the victory, so did Blake Cavill in this matchup with a single to center field that brought home both Piasecki and Pyne to pad the score for the home team towards a 7-2 final that ended with a double play on defense.
Troy senior pitcher Tommy Egan shined in his performance on the mound for the Trojans, striking out 8 and allowing five hits in 7.1 innings, and got some great defensive assists around him throughout the evening to help suppress many of Little Rock’s offensive hopes. The win for Troy punched a historic ticket for the program, sending them to Omaha and the DI CWS for the first time ever, their eighth CWS visit at any level, having made it to the final cut of play in the baseball postseason seven times at the Division II level, the last of those coming in the Trojans’ final year at that level of play in 1993.
Troy also becomes the third Sun Belt program ever to advance to Omaha. Troy will now turn their focus to preparing and doing anything they can to bring home the program’s first DI National Championship and first national title in general since the back-to-back DII baseball crowns won in 1986 and 1987 by then Troy State.
