The OM System OM-3 combines a nostalgic design inspired by the classic Olympus OM-1 film camera with cutting-edge features found in its contemporary mirrorless counterparts. This new camera offers a compelling blend of affordability, compact size, and advanced functionality.
OM System has announced a new Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera , the OM-3 , with a design inspired by the iconic Olympus OM-1 film camera that debuted in 1972. Despite its nostalgic aesthetic, the OM-3 packs features comparable to last year's OM System OM-1 Mark II, but in a more compact and budget-friendly body. This includes a 20.
37-megapixel stacked back-illuminated sensor and 10-bit 4K 60p video capabilities, bolstered by dedicated dials and buttons for color modes and computational photography features. The OM-3 inherits the same computational photography modes found on the OM-1 Mark II, offering seamless access via a dedicated button and control dial. A single press activates the last used mode, according to DPReview, while a long press reveals a customizable list featuring your most frequently employed effects and filters. These modes empower photographers with capabilities such as capturing higher-resolution images in 14-bit RAW (up to 50MP handheld or 80MP with a tripod), applying neutral density and graduated filters, crafting composite imagery using focus stacking and exposure bracketing, and leveraging AI-powered autofocus that can automatically detect specific subjects. It also retains its predecessor's prowess in capturing up to 120fps with focus locked on a subject, or up to 50fps with continuous autofocus, utilizing the same 1,053-point cross-phase-detect autofocus system. Another vintage-inspired control, the Creative Dial (borrowed from the Olympus Pen-F), sits conveniently next to the lens, granting photographers instant access to simulated film profiles, color, and black-and-white profiles with extensive customization options displayed directly on the screen. The OM System OM-3 is available for pre-order for $1,999.99 for the body alone or as part of a $2,299.99 kit that includes OM System's M.Zuiko ED 12-45mm F4.0 Pro lens. For a limited time, OM System is offering a $200 discount in the US when the OM-3 is purchased with either the $499.99 M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 II lens or the $549.99 M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 II lens. Shipping is anticipated to commence on February 27th, 2025. Other noteworthy features of the OM-3 include a 240 fps slow-mo video mode at 1080p resolution, a leatherette texture for enhanced grip, IP53 weather resistance (withstanding light water spray and limited dust ingress), and a rechargeable battery capable of fueling around 590 shots in Standard shooting mode. The OM-3 also boasts up to 70 frames of pre-capture shooting to ensure you never miss a shot, but its five-axis in-body stabilization is slightly less robust than the OM-1 Mark II's. It utilizes a single UHS-II SD card slot, offering less redundancy, and while it shares the same three-inch LCD display as the OM-1 Mark II, its electronic viewfinder boasts a lower resolution of 2.36 million dots compared to the OM-1 Mark II's 5.76 million dots
