Weather conditions ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics at the start of February are 'very unfavourable' when it comes to air quality, China's environment ministry spokesman Liu Youbin warned on Monday.

REUTERS/Fabrizio BenschBEIJING, Jan 24 - Chinese authorities will take action against polluters to ensure next month's Winter Olympics will be held in a "good environment", an environment ministry spokesman said on Monday, as particularly heavy smog shrouded the capital, Beijing.
"Beijing and Hebei … take necessary administrative measures during the preparation and staging of the Winter Olympics to adopt control measures against enterprises and vehicles with high pollution levels," Liu told a regular briefing.Since China won the bid for the Winter Olympics in 2015, authorities have tried to raise vehicle fuel standards, shut polluting firms and cut coal consumption in a bid to make the Games "green".
