Olympic sport climber Brooke Raboutou was the ultimate student-athlete at USD

What did you do after graduating college?

USD alum Brooke Raboutou competes in the women’s boulder and lead semifinal Thursday at the Paris Olympics. It’s not a psychological technique or facial treatment or new-fangled gym workout but the name of an enormous boulder tucked away in Wild Basin in Rocky Mountain Park in Colorado. Climbing boulders in North America are graded on a V-scale, starting at V-0 up to V-17 .

“People always ask me if I was pressed by my parents to climb,” Raboutou says. “I’m extremely grateful how my parents raised me. They never pushed me into the sport. They wanted me to love what I do. My brother and I grew up watching how much they loved climbing. When you watch somebody love what they do, you kind of fall of love with it yourself.”

There was some debate whether Raboutou, a rising star in the sport with its Olympic debut looming in Tokyo, should become a regular college student 1,000 miles away, with in-person classes, distractions — and roommates who might not have the same sleep schedules. “But I always wanted to go to college. I loved learning and I wasn’t ready to stop learning. It was never a question for me. Even if people questioned it themselves, I didn’t.”She admits it. She got there and considered the other alternative: retiring as a competitive climber.“I quickly realized I love what I do,” she says, “and I’m willing to make some sacrifices but I also want to find a balance that works for me.
