Sophie Hediger, a 26-year-old Olympic snowboarder representing Switzerland in the 2022 Winter Olympics , tragically died in an avalanche on December 23rd. The Swiss-Ski Federation confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow and condolences to Hediger's family. The incident occurred in the Swiss mountain resort town of Arosa, where Hediger was skiing on a closed slope. Emergency services were alerted but were unable to locate her for two hours. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Hediger, who grew up in Horgen, Switzerland, had achieved her first two World Cup podiums during the 2023-24 season. The cause of the avalanche and the condition of Hediger's skiing partner, who was also involved, are currently under investigation. Heavy snowfall in the region has contributed to an elevated risk of avalanches
