Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya loses landmark gender appeal, casting doubt on future competition

Female track star Caster Semenya has lost her appeal in court against a gender ruling that restricts the amount of testosterone female athletes can have in their bodies in order to compete.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that although the"DSD Regulations are discriminatory" a majority of the panel also found"such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF's aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics." The new regulations mean that athletes of a"difference in sexual development," or"DSD," with a high amount of testosterone in their systems will not be able to compete in female races.
