Joshua Edwards lost a split decision to Italy's Diego Lenzi to be eliminated from Paris Olympics
PARIS — When Houston ’s Joshua Edwards walked to the ring at the North Paris Arena on Monday to the chants of “USA, USA” from the scattering of U.S. fans in the stands, he had a focused and business-like demeanor. He was the top seed in the super heavyweight division and the favorite to become the first U.S. boxer since Tyrell Biggs in 1984 to win the gold. But those goals ended quickly as he lost his opening match by split decision and was eliminated.
Edwards landed more left jabs in the second and won the round, 3-2, but was charged a point deduction for not having his head up. “I’m tired,” Edwards said in his corner. Edwards and Lorenzi, who became the crowd favorite, each had their moments in the final round, which Edwards managed to take 3-2. But in the final scoring, the edge went to Lorenzi, who was the winner on three cards with one a draw.
