If you've visited Olvera Street, you may have noticed a stuffed donkey stand near the entrance. It may get evicted soon because of a contract issue after a death in the family. Many Angelenos are not happy at losing the beloved La Carreta stand, and a city council member may step in to help. The donkey stand has been a fixture of Olvera Street for photo ops and a callback to the original owners’ Mexican roots. Families have come for generations to snap a photo.
The early El Burrito y La Carreta was a live donkey. Trancito’s son, Richard Hernandez, remembers walking the animal from Eagle Rock to Olvera Street. But today, what stands in the small 10-foot space near the entrance of Olvera Street is a stuffed version.“When I see people walk in for the first time, they go, 'Oh wow, a little donkey,’” Hernandez said. “‘Is it real? Oh no, it's fake. How cool. Let's get a picture.' And they put on their hats. They hold a tequila bottle.
Hernandez’s eviction deadline was slated for Thursday, though he says his family has no plans to leave. The El Pueblo Commission will be taking up a discussion on the contract next week on May 23.
