Age Scotland research shows a substantial increase in the number of older people facing financial hardship.

A Scottish charity is urging older people to contact them to check they are not missing out on any unclaimed benefits or reductions in Council Tax. New research from Age Scotland has revealed a substantial increase in the number of older people facing financial hardship.

Eight in 10 over 50s claimed they had cut back on energy and heating, with just over half stating they had cut back on holidays. Just under half told the survey they have made cuts in relation to food, 46 per cent had stopped spending as much on socialising, and 41 per cent said they had reduced the amount of money they put into savings.

She added: “As we head into the colder months, it’s vital older people are claiming every penny they are entitled to. A quick call to our free 0800 12 44 222 can help you make sure you’re not missing out. “This provides a reliable annual £55 payment helping around 400,000 low-income individuals, including those in receipt of Pension Credit, with their heating expenses each winter.”
