Old Forester’s Master Taster Has Left to Start Her Own Whiskey Brand

At Hidden Barn, Jackie Zykan will craft spirits on a much smaller scale.

Zykan’s new role will essentially be that of a blender, and she’ll work with her partners to source and select whiskey for special limited-edition releases. “

I don’t wanna be a master distiller,” she told The Bourbon Review. “I don’t distill, and I don’t want to be a master distiller that doesn’t distill. I like to play with it post-maturation. I like to take the pieces and tell a story with them. I like to paint a picture with them.” The scale at which she will be operating now will be a far cry from what she did at Old Forester, going from blending hundreds of barrels to just a few at a time, but that seems to suit her well. There are a few whiskeys currently in the works that will be available only in Kentucky and Colorado upon release, and the focus will remain on one-offs and experiments as opposed to creating a core whiskey lineup.
