In their third consecutive GMC tournament final against Monroe, Old Bridge was able to once again claim the county championship, winning at home in straight sets.
Published: Oct. 29, 2024, 7:47 p.m.The Greater Middlesex Conference girls volleyball tournament has become much like the NBA in the mid 2010s, with Old Bridge and Monroe having a Warriors-Cavaliers like rivalry, being the matchup in the final for the last three straight seasons.Top 20, hosted the finale in this trilogy, with history repeating itself as the top-seeded Knights defeated second-seeded Monroe in straight sets, claiming their third consecutive county championship.
“We were trying not to get too much in our heads,” Malinoski said. “We had to have more of a challenge mindset and we were able to pick up what they were doing out there and take the game into our hands.” Facing match point, head coach Victoria Stec’s Falcons showed that they would not surrender, scoring four unanswered points before a match winning spike from All-GMC sophomore Ashley Markle sealed the match and the title with a 25-13 win in the second set for Old Bridge.
The All-GMC team was represented in this game by Markle, Malinowski, Khalil, and Grant. Old Bridge is now 4-3 in the last seven matches between these teams, which includes two GMC wins and a loss in last year’s Central Jersey Group 4 title game.
