Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters plans to revamp the 2025 school curriculum, focusing on presenting a balanced view of complex historical figures and events while rejecting what he calls 'woke garbage'.
Oklahoma 's 2025 school-year curriculum will undergo significant changes to distance itself from what state officials deem 'woke garbage' while ensuring students understand all facets of complex historical figures like Thomas Jefferson and Donald Trump, and events like the BLM movement and the Capitol riots.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters emphasized on Wednesday that Oklahoma is 'taking the lead' in 'directly rejecting' political influences on the curriculum, targeting groups like teachers' unions and activist educators. Walters stated, 'What we are not going to allow is these radical teachers' unions to push lies in the classroom. That's not how we're going to teach.' He explained that school curricula are revised every six years and that he intends to hold schools accountable by potentially withholding accreditation from institutions that fail to comply. Walters likened this initiative to Oklahoma's previous effort to reintroduce the Bible as a significant historical text shaping America's founding, arguing for a comprehensive perspective on key events and figures throughout U.S. history. He asserted, 'We are driving out this woke indoctrination and woke nonsense that has been injected into the classroom by undermining Republican presidents and American exceptionalism. So our kids are going to know America is a great country. They're not going to be taught to hate this country. They're going to be taught to love this country and a patriotism to come from the principles that our country was founded in our history.' Pointing to the past treatment of former President Ronald Reagan in educational materials, where some curricula emphasized his shortcomings during the Iran-Contra affair and Col. Oliver North's hearings, Walters declared he would not condone educators 'maligning' President-elect Trump in a similar manner
