Ohtani threw 26 pitches, striking out two batters and walking one before exiting.pinch-hit for Ohtani at designated hitter in the third inning.Shohei Ohtani was removed from today's game with arm fatigue. In terms of the Angels season, it doesn’t mean much. Their playoff hopes are dead and buried. For Ohtani and his impending free agency, this feels like it could be significant.
He’s dealt with various issues on the mound this year. Fatigue, and a nagging blister have compromised many of his starts, and have forced early exits. He’ll command a record salary regardless in free agency. But his long-term ability to be an elite starting pitcher and hitter have to be in every team’s calculation.
Ohtani has done everything for the Angels this season. Best hitter, best pitcher. Best everything on a team that’s going nowhere. Perhaps this is a sign it’s catching up to him. It’s not clear if there was one moment that led directly to Ohtani being pulled, but his velocity was down significantly across the board in the six batters he faced. His sweeper velo was down an average of 4.7 miles per hour, and his fastball was down 3.7 miles per hour.
It was a small sample size, and he does sometimes take a while to find his velocity in starts. This was probably all related to the fatigue he’s been dealing with for much of the past month. It will be interesting to see if Ohtani gets back on the mound again this season.Ohtani’s ERA sits at 3.14 over 132 innings pitched this season, the second-highest innings total of his career behind last season’s 166.
