Ohio's new state House and Senate district maps, approved by the Ohio Redistricting Commission last month. A proposed state constitutional amendment would replace the elected officials on the panel with a citizen's commission. This November, Ohioans are voting on abortion and recreational marijuana. But next November, we could be voting on a new, non-political process to draw fair legislative districts.
The campaign to put a redistricting amendment on the 2024 ballot will start soon to collect roughly 413,000 signatures from 44 of 88 Ohio counties by July. “For Ohioans of all political persuasions, this is a big day because the citizens are one step closer to taking the driver’s wheel and putting the politicians in the back seat,” said former Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, a Republican and leader of the statewide nonpartisan coalition behind the measure.
The proposed constitutional amendment would create a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission made up of regular citizens, equally split between Democrats, Republicans and voters who are not affiliated with any party. It would make it unconstitutional to draw voting districts that favor any political party or politician. It also would require the commission to operate under an open and independent process.
