State and federal officials will open a medical clinic for East Palestine residents early next week to “answer questions, evaluate symptoms and provide medical expertise” following a massive chemical spill from a derailed train.

Gov. Mike DeWine speaks at a news conference Friday about the East Palestine train derailment. Behind him stands Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Director Lori Criss and Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, director of the Ohio Department of Health.

In the days after the Feb. 3 derailment spilled large amounts of toxic chemicals, many residents reported symptoms such as headaches and sore throats, and others said chickens and other animals died. DeWine and other state officials have said that air and drinking-water testing in the area around the derailment so far haven’t shown any contamination, but the governor said it’s “understandable” that residents have health concerns.
