A former Toledo surgeon is accused of using his ex-wife's information to obtain abortion pills, which he then allegedly force-fed to his pregnant girlfriend.
TOLEDO, Ohio — A former Toledo surgeon is accused of using his ex-wife's information to obtain abortion pills, which he then allegedly force-fed to his pregnant girlfriend while she slept, According to the State Medical Board of Ohio in an order to suspend Hassan-James Abbas' license, Abbas had begun dating one of his patients in October 2024, shortly after separating from his wife.
The woman told Abbas in December that she was pregnant. He suggested she get an abortion, but she declined. Abbas then allegedly used his ex-wife's details, including her name, birthdate and driver's license number, to order two abortion drugs: one mifepristone pill and 12 misoprostol pills. In the following days, he began offering his girlfriend hot chocolate and tea, which was reportedly out of character in the relationship.
The prosecutor's office says the victim accepted at least some of these drinks. On Dec. 18, 2024, Abbas invited the victim to his home, then allegedly crushed the abortion pills into a powder. As his girlfriend slept, he "climbed on top of her, held her down against her will and shoved the crushed pills into her mouth.
" The woman was able to free herself and call 911. Abbas reportedly forced the phone out of her hand and ended the call. The woman then left to get care at a hospital. It's not known if her pregnancy survived.
Prosecutors allege Abbas then drove around and threw the remaining abortion pills out of the car window, making them impossible for investigators to find. On Wednesday, Abbas pleaded no contest — meaning he isn't admitting guilt, but acknowledges the facts laid out in the prosecution's charging documents are accurate — to four felony charges, including disrupting public services, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, identity fraud and deception to obtain a dangerous drug, according to the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office.
