After experiencing their first loss of the season at Penn State on Sunday, the Ohio State women's basketball team bounced back with a resounding victory, defeating No. 8 Maryland 74-66. This win marks their first victory against a top-10 opponent this year, propelling their season record to 18-1. The Buckeyes faced an uphill battle in the first half, trailing for the entirety of the period and falling behind by as many as 15 points.
However, they staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, ultimately overturning the deficit and securing their biggest win of the season thus far.Four Ohio State players achieved double-digit scoring, led by Jaloni Cambridge with 20 points. Cotie McMahon contributed 14 points, Taylor Thierry added 13, and Kennedy Cambridge put up a career-high 12 points. Maryland started strong, establishing a 22-12 lead within the first 10 minutes. Ohio State struggled offensively, shooting a dismal 5-of-18 from the field in the first quarter, missing all seven of their three-point attempts. The Terrapins also dominated the boards in the opening frame, out-rebounding the Buckeyes 17-6. Maryland's lead extended to 15 points early in the second quarter. Despite continuing shooting woes for most of the second quarter, ending the first half with a field goal percentage of only 22.9% (8-of-35), Ohio State managed to reduce Maryland's lead to seven points by halftime. This was largely due to forcing 13 turnovers in the first half while only committing three themselves. The turning point of the game arrived with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Ohio State capitalized on a pair of free throws by McMahon with back-to-back steals and fast-break layups. Thierry intercepted an inbounds pass and scored, followed by Kennedy Cambridge stealing another inbounds pass and finding McMahon for another quick basket. This sequence ignited a 15-0 run for the Buckeyes, transforming a 50-40 deficit into a 55-50 lead. They ended the third quarter with a 57-54 advantage. Ohio State continued their momentum into the fourth quarter, launching a 7-0 run to establish a 10-point lead. They maintained control throughout the remainder of the game, ultimately securing an eight-point victory. With this win, Ohio State improved to 7-1 in Big Ten play, placing them in sole possession of third place in the conference. They now trail USC and UCLA, who remain undefeated in conference play. This victory also marks their third win against ranked opponents this season, following triumphs over Illinois and Michigan in their previous games against ranked teams. The Buckeyes will face a team currently ranked just outside the top 25 in the AP poll in their next game on Sunday when they travel to Nebraska. The game will tip off at 3 p.m. and will be televised on the Big Ten Network
