Ohio State football shook off its troubled history in West Lafayette to beat Purdue.
The Buckeyes convincingly brushed aside an opponent in transition, 41-7. In their quest for efficiency and execution on offense and continued dominance on defense, they checked a lot of boxes in what has historically been a house of horrors.
• Denzel Burke left the game in the third quarter. Not only is he OSU’s best cornerback, he has arguably been the team’s most important defensive player. He vocally holds his teammates accountable and backs it up with his play.Ohio State already held a comfortable lead when he headed to the locker room. He has played through injuries before, and may need to do so again with a season-defining game up next.
Facing Purdue’s modest run defense, the OSU line more consistently established a push up front and led blocks into the second left. Trayanum, Hayden and Xavier Johnson all took advantage of wide holes while slicing into the secondary. Devin Brown’s goal-line package touchdown run was set up by a third-down conversion on which the entire left side of the line cleared out and laid down a red carpet for him.
If not for an anomalous handful of drops by Harrison and Julian Fleming, this game might have gotten out of hand even earlier. That cannot carry forward against Penn State’s talented secondary. Not can Kyle McCord’s at-times reckless ball security under pressure.
