Ohio State University students are protesting the university's continued affiliation with Les Wexner due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Students express concerns about Wexner's prominent presence on campus and the potential impact on the university's reputation. The university has received hundreds of requests for name removals.
Ohio State students said they do not want the university to be affiliated with Les Wexner due to his ties with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein ."I came out here today because our administration has been extremely complicit in what Wexner's doing," said student Madaleine Lake.
"We are openly showing his name all over campus, showing that he is a part of our school, and I don't think that that's a good reflection of what our school is and what we stand for," Lake said. Wexner and Limited Brands Foundation donated, raised, or pledged nearly $200 million dollars total to Ohio State, before February 17, 2011, according to the university. A $100 million commitment in February of 2011 mainly went toward The Ohio State University Medical Center and The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. "I can't believe that OSU has his name up and on a hospital, of all things," said Eric Heberling, an OSU student.to request and review name removals. An OSU spokesperson said the university had received about 295 submissions related to Wexner as of February 18.On the record, Wexner told lawmakers he was conned by his former financial advisor and was not aware of his criminal actions. Wexner does not face any criminal charges. When asked if he witnessed or observed anything that could have suggested Epstein was trafficking and sexually abusing women, Wexner said, "Absolutely not. I've asked myself that question over and over. Why I didn't see, there should have been a clue or something that I should have picked up on. There's nothing that I can recall. Nothing.""Ohio State supports the right of the campus community to speak out about issues that are important to them and advocate for causes in a way that is lawful." Ohio State Wexner Medical Center leaders also sent a statement in response to a similar protest outside the hospital on Sunday. "We respect our community’s right to speak publicly about issues that are important to them, and university policies assure the right to free expression while allowing medical center business to continue without substantial disruption. The university and medical center take the demonstrators’ concerns very seriously and investigations are proceeding. Additionally, there is an established process for considering renaming requests at the university.""How far will we defend these names until it's students on campus that are being affected? And you never know how far it's gonna go, and it could be you next," Lake said.Construction worker killed in hit-skip crash on I-70 A portion of Interstate 70 will be closed until Monday downtown after a crash early Saturday morning.A Franklin County Grand Jury has indicted six people accused of operating a million-dollar, multi-state drug trafficking ring. The man accused of shooting an East High School student in the parking lot of an East Side library went before a judge Friday.Nineteen-year-old Marsean Bowles iDozens of OSU students walked out of classes Friday to demand the removal of Les Wexner's name from campus buildings, including the medical center.
