An Ohio State University freshman reported seeing a man touching himself inappropriately while running on the Olentangy Trail. The student, who regularly runs on the trail, said she was able to get away and alerted another runner. Columbus police searched the area but did not find the man.
An Ohio State college student said she saw a man touching himself inappropriately while she was running on the Olentangy Trail . Lily, who is a freshman, said she was able to run away from the man, but she wants others to hear what happened so they keep their guard up and make safe choices.
"That's one of my favorite places on campus, and I hate that what happened today kind of took that away from me," Lily said. Lily runs on the Olentangy Trail multiple times a week. She said she is always conscious of her safety, wears one headphone, shares her location with family members, and changes her route often. On the morning of March 4, she said her run on the Olentangy Trail took a disturbing turn between Tuttle Park and the Dodridge bridge. "I saw a man in the woods very close to the trail, facing the trail, and I took note of that as I was passing because it's unusual," she said. "I noticed that he was touching himself and looking at the trail, facing the trail, and we made eye contact." She said she then tried to run quickly toward another man who was ahead of her on the trail at the time. "Immediately, my heart sank," she said. "I felt like I was going in slow motion for a second. And I just kept going, and after I don't even know how long, probably five seconds, I turned around to look to see if he was behind me, and he was exiting the woods onto the trail behind me." She was able to get away from the man and alerted another solo, female runner on the trail before getting off it herself and running home. "I waved her down immediately, and I stopped her, and I told her what happened, "Lily said. "And I was like, I don't know about you, but I would get off the trail here." Columbus police said officers searched the area but did not locate the man. Lily described him as being a white man with dark hair who is in his 30s or 40s. Hours after the encounter, the trail was busy with runners and walkers. They said they were surprised to hear about what happened. "As a freshman here, hearing about something like that is really, really disgusting to be honest," said Aryan Gujral, an Ohio State student. "I've never seen him before, but it's just one of those things that's like an unfortunate reality," said Lily. "There's always horror stories of things happening to women runners everywhere."Trail rangers recommend that runners and walkers go with another person.
