Ohio State might be able to have an automatic in to the College Football Playoff if Ryan Day has his way.
, Day said that he believes any future models of the College Football Playoff should include four automatic bids for the Big Ten. Right now, there are entries for the top five ranked conference champions and seven at-large spots.
Support has grown in recent times for a 16-team playoff, which as Day alluded to, could include guaranteed conference slots for the Big Ten and SEC. “We’re in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country,” Day said to ESPN. “I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers.” Ohio State, which opens the season against Texas on Aug. 30, would be de-incentivized to play big-time opponents like that.“If you don’t have those automatic qualifiers, you’re less likely to play a game like we’re playing this year against Texas, because it just won’t make sense,” Day said. “If we do, then you’re more likely to do that, because we play nine conference games in the Big Ten. The SEC doesn’t. So it’s not equal.”Ohio State will welcome a bevy of 2026, 2027 and 2028 prospects to Columbus starting today, June 5, on the first day of summer camps.
