The Ohio State offensive lineman tweeted Tuesday he completed his first day of chemotherapy for osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.
“It’s a very difficult time for everybody here,” Ohio State coachsaid. “We’re trying to give Avery as much space as we can during this time, but also know that he’s got a whole team behind him through this fight. Our culture is built on fight, and he’s in for a fight. This came out of nowhere for him, and his life got rocked.
“I told the guys after it happened that things like this give you perspective in life too. This is a reason why you get into coaching, to have an impact on young people and help Avery fight this battle.” Standing at 6-foot-6, 309 pounds, the tackle was a four-year starter at St. Clairsville High School, playing as a two-way lineman for a team that finished 13-2 in 2021 and advanced to the Division IV regional finals.
