At 39 years old, Jake Diebler is one of the youngest head coaches in college basketball, but he is more than twice as old as his pair of five-star freshmen.
Anthony Thompson, one of the highest-rated prospects in Ohio State history, is a 6-foot-9 McDonald’s All-American with a 7'3" wingspan - and he doesn’t turn 18 until next month.
“I think Coach Diebler and his whole staff made me a big priority coming in,” Thompson said. “The vision that he had. I was really excited to come in and be a part of that. ”“I think I expect those expectations being one of the highest rated guys.
But I go in and approach it by giving my all every day,” he said. Those expectations are shared by fellow five-star freshman L.J. Smith, who reclassified to join the Buckeyes this fall. The pairing gives Ohio State its first set of five-star freshmen since B.J.
Mullens and Will Buford in 2008. Smith was one of the best high school players in the country last year while playing for Oak Hill Academy — the same program that produced Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.
“First couple days it was a little rough adapting to the physicality and the speed, but now it’s slowing down and getting a little easier for me,” he said. Diebler said there is plenty of optimism around the program, and that Thompson and Smith are part of it.
“There’s a lot to be excited about. Those two guys certainly play a role in that,” Diebler said.
