Ohio State should not have much of a problem beating FCS opponent Youngstown State in its home opener, but there are still some players to keep an eye on.
Jaleel McLaughlin was the most explosive offensive player on Youngstown State’s roster last season, running for 1,588 yards and 13 touchdowns plus another 300 yards receiving. Now he is a Denver Bronco, and the Penguins are looking to replace that production.
King stepped up to that challenge in a 52-10 win over Valparaiso with 111 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. He is where the conversation starts in terms of replacing McLaughlin, but others such as Da’Shaun Whatley and Cephus Harris will have roles as well.Davison returns for his second year as YSU’s starting quarterback and third year in the program. In 2022, he completed 119 of 201 passes for 1,613 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception.
In the season opener he threw for 130 yards and a touchdown on 11 of 19 passes plus another 22 yards rushing. He has only thrown multiple touchdown passes in a game three times.Oliver returns as the Penguins’ leading receiver a year ago with 59 catches for 821 yards and 10 touchdowns. The next-closest receiver to him was Max Tomczak with 26 catches, 430 yards and two touchdowns. Oliver is coming off a season opener when he turned five catches into 65 yards.
