Ohio State football needs to make a commitment to a starting quarterback against Western Kentucky.
McCord completed 14 of 20 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns — two on downfield shots to Marvin Harrison Jr., one with a lot of yards-after-the-catch help from Emeka Egbuka. While he showed more polish than in the season opener, OSU still punted on three of its first seven drives. Not a catastrophe most weeks, but this was a Football Championship Subdivision opponent. The bar is set higher for everyone, and especially for the quarterback.
Brown completed 7 of 13 passes for 101 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. He led touchdown drives, with the running game doing a lot of heavy lifting. He balanced his high and low moments in the passing game. In time, he will be better. Right now, though, the Buckeyes cannot come out of the first time games assuming their quarterback play will be better than that of their next two opponents.
Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman also came from somewhere else. Last season he was the nation’s 15th best passer per the efficiency rating stat . A bunch of guys who were either Heisman Trophy finalists last season or are considered contenders this season couldn’t match that number.Day can make a quarterback commitment for the next two weeks that does not preclude him from revisiting the decision after Notre Dame. The off week hits at a perfect time for reflection over the first third of the season.
