Researchers create wearable device that monitors walking patterns to provide early warnings for Parkinson's disease and other conditions.
OSU scientists are developing a new smart insole system that monitors how people walk in real time. It could help users improve posture and provide early warnings for conditions from plantar fasciitis to Parkinson’s disease.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio State University scientists are developing a new smart insole that monitors how people walk to provide early warnings for Parkinson’s disease, diabetic foot ulcers and other conditions, uses 22 small pressure sensors powered by small solar panels on the tops of shoes. The power is stored in tiny lithium batteries, Ohio State said. The smart insole also uses artificial intelligence to recognize eight types of motion, from sitting and standing, to running and squatting, Ohio State said. This could allow the device to be used for posture correction, injury prevention and rehabilitation monitoring. The technology will likely be available commercially within the next three to five years, researchers said in a news release. “Our bodies carry lots of useful information that we’re not even aware of,” said Li. “These statuses also change over time, so it’s our goal to use electronics to extract and decode those signals to encourage better health care checks.” Sensors in the insole allowed researchers to see how the pressure on parts of the foot is different in activities such as walking versus running. Scientists learned that when people walk, pressure was applied sequentially from the heel to the toes. When people run, almost all sensors were subjected to pressure simultaneously., the lead author of the study and a PhD student in materials science and engineering at Ohio State, wanted this wearable device to collect and analyze data precisely, and have a reliable source of power, Li said.Ohio replicates successful Cincinnati model to reduce infant deaths statewideIf you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
